A painless yet effective hair removal system

DMK Alkaline was removes fine, downy hair painlessly and effectively. It is a unique and superior hair removal treatment.

Uniqueness and benefits:

  • Alkaline wash weakens and eventually reduces hair growth
  • The treatment is pain free
  • Eradicates ingrown hairs and folliculitis and prevents them from re-occurring
  • Alkaline wash removes fine, downy hairs, as well as improving the skins texture and colour
  • It is non-invasive
  • Does not cause pigmentation
  • Suitable for all skin types/conditions
  • Ideal for people who are unsuitable for laser (hair is too blond/grey to treat)
  • Can be used in conjunction with laser

Light is absorbed by the melanin (the pigment in the hair follicle). The light energy heats the pigment and effectively destroys the hair follicle without destroying the surrounding cell. The Laser or Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) is placed on the skin and a short pulse of light is released, which target many follicles simultaneously. The applicator is then moved to the neighbouring area of the skin and the process is repeated until the entire area is covered. For IPL treatments, a thin layer of gel is applied to the skin to help guide the light.

It is impossible to treat an area for hair removal in one session because all hair grows in cycles.

Hairs grow in constant cycles:  Firstly hairs are actively growing, then they become dormant (resting), and finally they loosen and shed, only to be replaced by more new, actively growing hairs.

Only hair follicles in the active growth stage are disabled by IPL/Laser treatments.

Hairs in the dormant stage of the growth cycle normally remain anchored in the follicles for weeks or months, depending on their location, but their follicles and associated hair germination cells are not disabled by IPL/Laser treatments.  These follicles will be treated in subsequent sessions.   This is why you need repeated sessions.  Hair growth becomes sparser with each session. All treated hairs should shed within about two weeks.

Most people are suitable for treatment. Best results are seen with people who have both lighter skin and darker hair. Dark hair is more easily treated as it has a high concentration of melanin. Fair hair, however contains less melanin so is harder to treat. Grey/white hair has no melanin so is not suitable for treatment.

Treatment sensation varies but it is often compared to the flick of an elastic band. No anaesthetic is required and most clients describe the discomfort as moderate and tolerable.

The hair follicles are damaged by the heat but the hairs remain in the follicles. The dead hairs shed after 1 to 3 weeks as the epidermis renews. During this period the hairs will seem to grow as they are pushed out by the new epidermis.

The skin may be red immediately after treatment and the hair follicles may be swollen and raised but this usually subsides within a few hours. Adverse reactions are rare but may include a small blister or temporary lightening or darkening of the skin.

Only hair that is actively growing is affected, therefore multiple treatments are needed. Treatments are conducted every four to eight weeks depending on the area being treated, until a good result is seen. The number of treatments varies, and can be anything from 6 - 12 treatments to allow optimum results.

Treatment can be as little as 10 minutes and up to 1 hour depending on the size of the area being treated.

What is alkaline and how does it work?

Alkaline wash is a powder that is mixed into a paste and applied to the desired area for a short period of time, depending on the coarseness of the hair. The treatment is not like a hair removal cream, it is of a much higher PH, swelling the hair shaft, as it dissolves the hair. The alkaline was solution enters the hair shaft, damaging and weakening the papilla the hair grows from, reducing hair re-growth.

After the first treatment the hair will grow back at the normal rate, but as treatments progress, the rate of re-growth will be lessened, usually resulting in a reduction of hair growth and some permanent hair loss over a period of time.

Is alkaline bad for my skin?

No, Alkaline wash is used in many of DMK’s skin revision systems and is not bad for the skin. We always complete the treatment with appropriate products to restore optimal skin health.

Will hair grow back thicker or darker?

It is physically impossible for your hair to grow back thicker or darker as the alkaline wash weakens and eventually reduces hair growth.

How often will I need to have this done?

When you initially start you would have the treatment as often as you would wax the area. As the hair growth weakens, the hair is reduced and your treatments will become further and further apart. These treatments are progressive, there is no quick fix treatment that gets rid of hair permanently.

Can I wear makeup?

You can wear makeup 8 hours after an alkaline treatment.

How many appointments will I need?

The length of time for hair to stop growing back will depend on the individual, but usually it takes between 12-15 treatments.
